They usually pay me in Pogs or Monster in My Pocket figures. Anyway, I've had the extreme good fortune of working with two such projects recently, which happen to create music of the highest artistic magnitude in all of western MA. IMHO. Let me demonstrate my arrogance by telling you what they sound like to me.

HOUSE OF TEETH: "Sweet-tooth Segue to Stormy Weather" - I mastered two full lengths from this dude - Jacob Gaulin (Cora's bro!). The first was a fortress of sound, fortified with Bowie-esque about-faces and strangely melodic noise. And this was the second, given to me on Thanksgiving to master. I didn't get around to it until February. I had it in my car literally all winter and listened to it once a day at least. I couldn't part with it. Totally made me feel stupid and devoid of anything resembling talent. Made with shitty Garageband synth-plug-ins and some drum triggers... I haven't the foggiest idea how Jake squeezed out the gorgeous, falsetto-peppered, buzzing squalor of psych-hop, synth-pop therein. Lovely discordance.

LOLFM: "We Are It's Waves" - A local electro "supergroup" of sorts, featuring Eric Hnatow, Noam Schatz (Mobius Band, 3rdness), and an elusive dude I know only as "Aaron". 45+ minutes of 8-bit transcendental meditation Kraut-scapes, created with broken toys circuit-bent beyond recognition, an armada of Casio MTs, an iPod, and Hnatow's corrosive electribe synths. Some of you know that name, some of you do not. More accurately, some of you may THINK you know that name. But are you absolutely certain that you know the REAL Scott Alden?

Northampton-based renaissance man Scott Alden - comic artist, lead croon-factory of TASHA YAR and LEVELETTE, and sole proprietor of the continuing propagation of cleverly themed shows in Northampton (the VS. series among others) - has a new project called THE TRIALS OF GARY. The Trials of Gary is a weekly web comic that follows the adventures of a young wizard at a pivotal point in his training. Sounds dull and derivative, I know. But the execution is bloody brilliant and addictive. For the cost of a slice of pizza you can sign up for the comic here.

Anyway, this Sunday, Scott has enlisted Sylphid, Rabbit Rabbit, Friends of Yours, and Dust Savior to provide aural stimulation during Gary's first live trial, at The Elevens in Northampton, MA. I cannot explain this extravaganza in my own words, so I'll let Scott take over from this point forward:

-On Saturday 2/27 at 11:59 PM, I begin. As Gary enters the bloody and lawless kingdom of Boldwall to collect one dollar from each year of King Marel Yath's reign without the use of his magics, I will enter the Dunkin Donuts on King Street armed with colored pencils and fierce determination.

-I will have until 11:59 PM on Sunday 2/28 to create one dollar from each year of Marel Yath's reign. The currency will be rendered in color on both sides.

-At 9pm on Sunday 2/28 I will be seated by the stage at the Elevens on Pleasant Street in Northampton, MA and will have three hours to finish whatever dollars remain.

-I will be inspired to glory by the sounds of Dust Savior, Sylphid, Friends of Yours and Rabbit Rabbit.

-The dollars will be for sale at the event for ONE DOLLAR each. Don't worry, each dollar will be photographed before it is sold.

-Subscribers to The Trials of Gary get into the event for free, but you must RSVP to me by email if you're coming, so I can put you on the list.

-Non-members will pay a five dollar cover charge for which they also receive a trial subscription to the series.

-Should the unthinkable happen and I fail this challenge, Gary also fails at his and the repercussions will change the storyline completely. So, wish me luck because if he doesn't get across the Moody River, I haven't a clue where to go from there.

If that isn't rad enough, Andy (you know... from Ponds, Graph, Twenty-three, Sisters and Brothers, Belltone Suicide, Metallica) will be sitting in on the Sylphid set with us. In other words, just fucking go. This shit is going to be belligerent and I fear for the families and all-around well-being of anyone not in attendance.

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-52238152834464186252010-02-23T12:50:00.000-08:002010-02-23T12:53:17.233-08:00StatickerI am at work. Cora made this video for school a couple months ago, and set it to the Sylphid piece "B.07.10.09". I assisted with my svelte, sleek, sexiness. Like a tar baby writhing in a patch of brambly sex dragons.

I bring you "Zenshin Taitsu".

Oh, also... this: Sylphid has this new mailing list thing. I know what you're thinking. "Big fucking yank. One more newsletter that I'll get every other week wedged between the South Beach diet recipes and MoveOn.org petitions. What is it 2001 again? Since when do bands even bother with newsletters anymore?"

Well...

This isn't your garden variety, "here are some shows we're playing 126 miles away from you" mailing list. I like to think of it more as an exclusive club where the members get free shit for being totally dope. In fact, anyone who signs up gets an unreleased track speared through their inbox the same day. In addition, we're working on two new releases. Our first *actual* releases to be distributed by *actual* labels. Several dozen tracks are being recorded, and only a mittful will be released. The rest? Oh you know... WE'LL SEND YOU ONE ON THE FIRST DAY OF EVERY MONTH. Free buttons, stickers, magnets, etc. will also be involved. And the prerequisite newsletter? We'll send an extra special one, rife with perspiration-inspiring secrets each month. One. That's it. Promise.

Anyway, if loads of awesome, free, material is your stripe then click on the link below. All others need not apply.

pozegnanie,

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-21604130199197959042010-02-06T08:09:00.000-08:002010-02-06T08:57:48.964-08:00A 15-headed Hydra Breathing All Over You
I'm at work right now fooling employees I preside over into thinking that I'm laboring over their well-being and meticulously scheming to improve their work performance. In actuality I'm typing this up and ignoring them. That's not the point though. The point is that I'm at my day job while I'm supposed to be 1 of 15 people belting out the lyrics to ambiguous protest songs at Bank Row Studios right now.

Yes. As I type this, The Trials and Tribulations is in the studio (sans me) torturing Justin Pizzoferato (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth) with it's folk-sludge mash of 5409 individuals all braying in cacophonous unison. I'll be joining them tomorrow to lay down some synth squiggles and crunchy organ drones on "Quebec", an evil, swampy rendition of "You are my Sunshine", and the epic and absolutely fucking crushing "President Arbenz' Last Smile". Now I've had my doubts about T&T before. I'll be the first to admit that it can be a chaotic mess. In a bad way. But after the recording rehearsal last weekend, all of those doubts were shattered like the dreams of a pregnant teenager. Apropos because Sylphid is back, not only with teeth, but with a badassed, off-the-rails partner in plugging South African diplomats with hollow-tipped bullets. That's right - our very own PA system. You can call him Riggs.

Eon, Cora, and I congregated like cows huddled for warmth during a nor'easter yesterday and squeezed out an effluvium of pretty sounds for the first time since early October. We tested out our new PA system. Sounds totally dope. This year, we will test out our new live format. Anonymous background music.

We're now officially in the process of offering our minds and bodies (and the products thereof)to anyone who seeks slightly noisy, oft-unpredictable, textural drones and lullabies for their listening needs. Restaurants, parties in opium dens, art galleries, lonely insomniacs et al: we are here to offer you a delta-wave stimulating, narcosis electronic-helping hand.

Sorry Madame Rock Clubs. You were our first love. Freaking out onstage, drawing blood, and generally making a spectacle of yourself is fun... unless you're making ambient music. We do not write songs. Our music is bereft of a tangible personality. To showcase our ugly mugs bobbing several feet above a confused and underwhelmed crowd, conditioned to devote it's attention to us, makes very little sense to me. It's time for us to move on and find slightly less spotlight-driven venues. The less of a stage there is the better. We will however be providing background music and drones wherever it's wanted or needed.

One of the first of these performances will be this Thursday night at Sam's Pizza on Main Street in Northampton, MA. We'll be playing roughly 3 hours (6:30-9:30) of moody blip-bleeps. It's also free. We're being paid in pizza. And holy god of fleeting joy, Sam's pizza just so happens to be the best in town.

Other shows coming up:

-Sat. Jan. 23 Don't Go In the Basement house show @ 4 Caterbury Lane in Amherst. PONDS will also be rocking the show for the first time in awhile. Also appearing are Hornworm, Abortus Fever, Belltone Suicide, Two Tents, and the lascivious Gastric Lavage. Fuck. Go to this. Hornworm's dream machine will be in full effect.

-Sun. Jan 31 @ The Elevens. This is the Happy Valley Showdown. Sylphid will be appearing alongside Visited By A Giant, Johhny Mondegreen, Golden Boys, Almost Morse Code, and Tasha Yar. Come watch us play an ill-fitting show judged by folks who will sneer at our absence of onstage banter. It's good to be back. It's been awhile. Super busy the entire month of December. Filing through the throngs of holiday shoppers to purchase whale penis-skin arm rests and other unneeded junk... enduring painfully awkward family get-togethers buffered only by convenience store wine... watching neighbors' homes leveled by a serial arsonist... the usual mixed bag of holiday tricks.

Eon's home was not engulfed in flames. His neighbor's was though and, sadly, did not survive the ordeal.

Amid the entire town burning, Eon managed to finish the 2nd Light album Beams of Light Like Insects Crowd the Floor. I received an advance copy and have been envy-stricken ever since. Shit sounds like the ghostly pleads of a malfunctioning transistor radio wafting up from the bottom of a frozen lake. I'm awaiting details regarding a proper release. But for now, you can hear some of the album tracks HERE and check out the album artwork AT THIS PLACE.

Changing topics, The Trials and Tribulations is slowly assembling to record an unknown number of songs with an unknown number of musicians and an entirely unreasonable number of instruments. Regardless of how many trumpet, violin, organ, acoustic and electric guitar, bowed and plucked bass, shaker and tambourine, glockenspiel, trombone, omnichord, flute, melodica, found-sound, banjo, and saw-players lead-depressor Jameson Lavo accumulates, I assure you it will be ten short of his satisfaction. I have no idea how this will sound but I'm absolutely fucking terrified. I'm sure the production team behind such a soup of unwieldy sounds - Justin Pizzoferato and Aaron Borucki (from Bank Row Studios [Dinosaur Jr., Bunnies] and Something Studios [Mire, My My] respectively) - could agree. I'll let you from the frontline once I'm deployed next month. It looks like Aaron posted an in-progress version of T&T's "...to Alaska!" on the Something Studios myspace. So go there and listen to this song in the most skeletal incarnation that it will ever appear in - only 12 instruments on this version.

I'm tired and don't feel like typing any more. Eat it.

no, I love you.

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-54724666651533268172009-12-02T08:02:00.000-08:002009-12-02T08:20:18.727-08:00Sorry for the poop jokes WillPonds recorded this past Sunday for a behemoth 12-hour block with Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios in Leverett, MA. The day was grotesquely productive.

In that 12 hour span:

-we recorded 4 songs almost entirely - "Heart/Lungs", "A New Hampshire Mirage", "Prophylaxis", and "198 Pieces". Song names always sound stupid when you're sharing them with people.

-we talked about poop only twice

-when we tired of talking about poop we changed the topic to music. The only band we could think to talk about was SHAT

-Bard recorded guitar solos. Fucking guitar solos. Two of em. Jesus.

-I ate two entire bags of trail mix. That was all I ate. The following day was a grisly ordeal.

-the unmixed, rough, result is a nightmarish mess. Terrifying. I think you'll love it.

We'll be returned to Dead Air after the first of the year to record a 5th song, "Stork Bites" and to track vocals, samples, drones, et al. Between now and then, we'll figure out what exactly we're going to be doing with these 5 pieces of horror and let you know as soon as that happens.

bye bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-57126988541089461032009-11-28T08:16:00.000-08:002009-11-28T09:07:41.518-08:00Recording: Dealing with no daylight whatsoeverThe entire roster of holdyourbreath Music has fallen into live slumber lately. Very few live shows to speak of, though things will be picking up considerably after the first of the year. For now, beneath the perceived lag, and in classic introvert style, our brains have been atwitter with writing and recording activity. Every... single... project. I'm assuming this has something to do with our distaste for being around other human beings that only increases as the amount of daylight wanes.

PONDS will begin recording an EP tomorrow in Leverett, MA with Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios!! This is very exciting. I'll let you know how it goes on Monday. Will: don't fuck this up or else I'll make icky jokes about you on a blog that no one reads. Consider the arc of your entire career in the crosshairs.

THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS has been meandering about, recording songs here, some there, and even a few over there. Today, Cora, Bard, and I will be hearing some of these recordings for the first time and contributing bass, bells, and guitar on the song "Alaska". Eventually these bits of histrionica will make their way onto some sort of release. Possibly two releases? Ask Jamie Lavo. Email him: trials.tribulations01@gmail.com

SYLPHID is slowly, painstakingly recording dozens of pieces. I'd hazard to guess that this will continue until the ground thaws, leaving us with a mass of music roughly the size of Siberia to sift through and compile into our first actual LP.

TUNDRA TODDLER has clambered back onto it's feet. If it ever were on it's feet in the first place. I have 5 years worth of demos that I've been giving the eyeball, the eardrum, and the harelip lately. 8 of these have been selected and are getting re-honed and thrown back down onto fresh tape err... hard drive. I imagine that within a week or two I'll be dumping every thread of my being into this and not really coming up for air until it's done.

The LIGHT album is nearly done from what I understand. I wouldn't know. I haven't talked to Eon lately. Though I'm in a band with him and he's one of my best friends, I think I've talked to him for a net total of 2 hours in the last month. Should be a good barometer for my anti-social behavior lately. Sorry everyone. Spring is just around the corner in 4 months. Anyway, the new Light is absolutely fantastic. Perfect for long, dark nights, with the weather-proof windows to your home gathering frost patterns, sputtering heating vents in the corner. It will be called "Beams of Light Like Insects Crowd the Floor".

loves,

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-24661771113541417132009-11-09T16:14:00.000-08:002009-11-09T16:50:58.464-08:002 Last Minute Shows...Lots of wee 'ittle bits of news this week.

First things first: There are 2 last minute shows quickly advancing this week. A bit bummed about this, only because this is my first opportunity to really tell anyone at all about them.

This Thursday (Nov. 12) PONDS will be rocking the the dirt out of our hair and the grease out of our beards at O'Brien's Pub in Allston, MA with God Awful and other mysterious bands that are unbeknown to us. This is bound to be a dead show and I apologize to all two of my bandmates for booking such a waste of gas. Come out and prove us wrong! Nevertheless, thank you Mr. Shred for keeping us in mind. Starts at 9pm, 21+, and I believe can be had for $7. click for directions. You don't want to get lost in the bone bucket that is Allston...

Show # 2 is this Saturday night (Nov. 14). SYLPHID is playing a house show in South Deerfield, MA at the Woodrose Ballroom (7 River Rd.) with Almost Morse Code. I jammed with these cats roughly a year ago. Weird, Krauty psychedelic squalls of splendor. A wall of synthesizers, a homemade electronic drum kit... I'm missing The Jesus Lizard and Animal Hospital in Boston for this, so you know it'll be good.

In other news there has been a truly mongoloidal amount of recording activity lately. We've got 4 separate projects in the process of recording material for various EPs, full lengths, and downloadable tracks. It's consumed our entire being - and we wouldn't have that shit any other way. More to come oh so soon!

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-35413581814050591592009-11-01T22:36:00.000-08:002009-11-01T22:55:52.340-08:00Unreleased Cheaters Club Track AvailableHey everyone. Remember The Cheaters Club? Neither do we. The Cheaters Club has fallen to the back of the backburner, to where all of the olive oil residue and bacon drippings collect, where it may very well stay indefinitely. Or not. We're all (relatively) happy chaps at this time in our lives and I think it'd be disingenuous for us to blaze that trail for the time being. Only time will tell.

Anyway, I was meandering through my hard drive today dispensing of unlistenable 90s NoMeansNo mp3s when I happened upon an old, notably apocalyptic, demo(?) for a song that we never managed to do much of anything with. I thought you might be interested in hearing it.

So until our families are crushed by an upended tractor trailer full of beef, or we watch our best friend slowly engulfed by Parkinson's Disease, you can tide yourself over with the unreleased track "Wake Me Up" on the myspace player.

THE CHEATERS CLUB ON MYSPACE

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-45996332499661937482009-10-30T17:41:00.000-07:002009-10-30T18:50:45.167-07:00Ponds Live Recordings Available On the Now-Obsolete Myspace!I posted two very rough live recordings from our show up in Peterborough, NH at Toadstool Books from a few weeks ago - courtesy of the beautiful Dave Seidel and his (startlingly) even more beautiful Zoom digital recorder that he smuggled into the store. Way to bootleg our recordings Dave. This shit's going to be worth it's weight in gold someday, possibly, but not likely... or even at all.

Check out "Heart/Lungs" and "A New Hampshire Mirage" on the PONDS MYSPACE.

More shows to report in a couple o' days.

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-66529740243968997212009-10-08T19:00:00.000-07:002009-10-08T19:16:09.443-07:00Ponds shows! Ponds Recording! Ponds Ponds!Holy confused priorities. After 6 months of near inactivity, Ponds is back to playing shows. For now we only have 2 shows in the upcoming weeks, but we're just barely creaking out of sleep and dusting the rust off. I say "near inactivity" because we have hatched out a few new, ugly, throbbing lumps of evil that we'll be debuting at these shows.

It also looks like next month we'll be holing ourselves up at Dead Air Studios in Leverett, MA with Will Killingsworth (Orchid, Ampere, Bucket Full of Teeth) to record a 5 song EP. We're longtime fans of Will's output, so expect lots of ass-rimming on our part.

In the meantime, Ponds will be playing Sat. Oct 17 @ Toadstool Books in Peterborough, NH with the deliciously stoned Black Norse. The shows starts at around 6pm. Click the link for directions.
We'll also be playing a house show in Granby, MA on Halloween afternoon/evening with the likes of Belltone Suicide, Evil Bill, Problem with Dragons, Whyte Castles, Radioactive Prostitute, Hornworm, Jow Jow, Bunwinkies, The Lamb Bashers, and of course, The Two Tents band, who are throwing this abominable soiree.
If you're on facebook, here's a link to the event for more info: HALLOWEEN SHIT.

Have the fun.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5638390361482491131.post-23117312567825797952009-09-14T19:44:00.000-07:002009-09-14T20:18:01.357-07:00Light's First show! He had recorded an album worth of material back in '05, hand-packaged the results, and shelved it after passing it along to a couple dozen folks. This is unfortunate and ugly. Being one of the few people to own the debut, I'm ludicrously excited that he's forded the swamp of writer's block (or what have you) and is working on new material.
As excited as I am, I'm equally as disappointed with myself for missing his off-the-cuff live premier at The Elevens in Northampton last Saturday. I hear it went off without a hitch. Hopefully more will come. A total must for fans of Pole, Casino Vs Japan, and Lullatone. Here's a link so I can stop burying my snout in Eon's ass now. LIGHT circa 2005.

Also in the developing stages, we're excited to be participating in the Multiple Artist Ambient Project. A pet project of Daniel Davis (of Carl Sagan's Ghost), MAAP is, in his words...

"...a multiple-artist album in multiple-parts that are meant to be played simultaneously in a mix-and-match fashion up to the listener’s preference. Each participating artist will record their own part for each composition. These parts will then be assembled by the listener for a unique, interactive listening experience. The parts can be downloaded and then assembled via an audio editor like Audacity. The parts can be downloaded and then played simultaneously on different audio devices. The parts can be played via an interactive website to be designed at a later date..."

As the name suggests, multiple electronic artists will be getting involved and providing minimal textures, blips, drones, et al. Sylphid has been nominated for "best electronica act". Groovy? Sure.

Winners of each category will play an all-day festival at this enormous honking sports bar called Maximum Capacity (or "MaxCap" as the locals call it) - a mainstay of reunited, hair-metal fixtures such as Slaughter and Firehouse... and a perfect venue for our brand of bucolic, delta-wave-inducing ambient squalor.

So be a peach and help us out! If you've haphazardly stumbled upon this page, then you've probably heard of one of our projects. Blush. What's even more, you probably took enough interest in what hatched and oozed from our brains and bodies to follow one or more of our projects' myspace pages, since that is the only place we've chosen to pass along the word that is this site. Erections. If that isn't enough, NO ONE in their EVER-LOVING RIGHT MIND would still bother farting around with the user-shredding interface of myspace.

Unless of course, you're a fan.

Our sole motivation behind unveiling our collective corner of the internet via myspace's crummy antiquity is that you probably qualify as a fan. If you had taken the initiative to maneuver through the endless spawn of legions of backwoods tweens and bot-abusing metal bands to read our advert from within the cyber-folds yellowed panties then I would say you qualify as a fan. Any interest you have, the volume of which matters not, is humbling. Without you, the artistic process would not only be nullified, but incomplete.

Interest in what you may ask?

This little, swirling gyre of creative waste, is the combined effect of the musical projects of Eon Fontes-May, Cora Rose Gaulin, and myself, Adam Kozak. Functioning, or no-longer functioning. And those would be SYLPHID, PONDS, THE CHEATERS CLUB, LIGHT, TUNDRA TODDLER, GUILTY RICH WHITE KIDS, THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS, and whatever the fuck else we feel like releasing without a budget, on a whim. All news, show-listings, and general information regarding any of those bands will be available on here, along with miscellaneous crap we're presumptuous enough to think you'll find interesting/amusing.

So read on! Check back daily.

~AdamUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0
